In the Middle Ages, hunting was the privilege of the nobility, linked with the right to land ownership. It had both symbolic and social significance: The elites in charge of the armies could demonstrate and prove their abilities as warriors through hunting.
The practice of hunting became regulated during the Middle Ages. Being invited to hunt with the King was a great honor. Forest planning for the use of the kings, brought about a rapid increase of animals which were harmful to the peasants’ crops. Hunting therefore aimed at eliminating such animals in order to protect the plantations.
Under the reign of Francis the First, during the French Renaissance, hunting with hounds became popular. During this period, hunting became a privilege of nobility, and the right to practice it was directly linked to the right to land ownership. Poaching, which up until this time had been tolerated, was now severely punished and non-noble people were formally prohibited from hunting.
Hunting seasons for all types of games vary from state to state, there is a website, hunting season HQ (click here to see the dates for your area) which lists the season-opening and closing dates for each state. For those of you in Texas, the Texas Parks and Wildlife website always has the current information for the hunting of every type. Speaking of Texas, did you know that Texas leads the nation in the number of hunters but it is also the largest state in the whitetail’s range, so hunter density is light. Notably, the Northeast averages nearly twice as many hunters PSM as the Midwest and Southeast, and about 10 times as many as the West. As of the fall of 2020, there are about 11.4 million deer hunters in the United States. Interestingly, France is the European country with the most hunters.
